The Volunteers in Police Service began in 1986. The program was begun in response to budgetary restraints and the prospect of personnel cutbacks. Tasks that could be appropriately performed by volunteers were identified and a source of volunteers located. The program began with fifteen volunteers.

VIPS has grown to over one hundred twenty volunteers and have donated over 150,000 hours of service. Volunteers are currently assigned to the following areas of the Police Department:

  • Crime Stoppers Tip Line
  • Crime Trend Analysis Group
  • Detective Division
  • Diversified Crimes Unit – UDE
  • Explorer Post 10

  • Gray Squad (Cold Case Homicide)
  • Office of Integrity and Compliance
  • Pawn Detail

To be a VIPS volunteer you must be at least eighteen years of age or a member of the Tulsa Police Department Explorer Post #10. Volunteer applicants must complete an application/background questionnaire and submit it to the VIPS Coordinator.

Background investigations will be conducted on each applicant. The VIPS Coordinator will interview all applicants. Those volunteers accepted into the program receive on-the-job training from the supervisor of the work area where they volunteer. In addition, volunteer training sessions are offered on an as needed basis.
